Summer may be coming to an end, but the heat is persisting on. While air conditioning saves many from intense outside temperatures, it is not always reliable. In fact, a school was recently affected by an inefficient HVAC unit. Don’t let your unit get in the way of a smoke detector or other important household protector.
Follow these tips to make sure your unit is safe:
- Turn off all unnecessary lights, appliances, computers, monitors, and other electronic equipment.
- When possible, close blinds that get direct sun, set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, and use fans to cool the air.
- Avoid using your space heaters, dishwasher, laundry equipment, hair dryers, coffee makers, or other appliances during the peak hours of noon to 6 p.m.
- Avoid opening refrigerators or freezers more than necessary.
- Use a gas range or microwave for cooking instead of an electric range or electric oven.
